Warm-ups, vocalises, repertoire, and an understanding of human anatomy will facilitate comprehension and coordination of these basic concepts over time. With time, practice, and communication, your voice’s natural beauty will reveal itself!
AP Voice Studio offers private voice lessons, ages 13-adult, specializing in classical vocal training at the beginning through intermediate levels.
Why the age limit? The voice is an extremely abstract instrument due to the inability to see it in action and the involuntary control of many of the functioning muscles. The older a student is, the more easily the concepts can be grasped. Furthermore, the voice is not fully developed until the mid-20s/30s. These two factors mean that the younger a student is when intense study and singing is started, the greater the likelihood for vocal damage. Unless a child is already performing professionally, the best way to keep them singing and enjoying music is by helping them join a choir in the community and encouraging them to learn about music through group classes and/or other instruments.
Why classical training? Classical training provides a solid foundation for healthy vocal production, just like learning the alphabet provides the foundation for reading. It is the oldest, most researched, and healthiest method of singing, and is the most adaptable. Classical instruction teaches the application of basic singing principles that can later be adopted into more contemporary styles, such as musical theater and popular music, if so desired. Believe it or not, many of the most successful Broadway, popular, and rock singers are classically trained! Classical training can also help ensure the longevity and overall health of the voice, regardless of the chosen speaking and/or singing style.
